FIFTY-FIVE YEARS AGO: Strange animal visits first-grade rooms, swallows Valentines, lost among children anxious to be in photo. A strange animal has been visiting the first-grade rooms at Laura Ingalls Wilder Elementary School here – a Valentine-visiting giraffe named Snoopy. Snoopy has a way all his own. He does not take the Valentines from the children but will swallow them when they are placed in his mouth. Legs made of 14-quart oil cans, body from a cardboard box, his neck a 5 1/2-gallon plastic bottle and head a shoebox – such is Snoopy. A product of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Glover, she a teacher’s aide in the school. The News camera went a-visiting when the appearance of Snoopy was reported, and what was to have been a picture of a few developed into a full-class picture after Dale Coughlin was prevailed upon with questions: “Will the picture be in the paper?” The result is this large group of smiling faces, with Snoopy but partially shown – very likely forlorn over this loss of attention. Mrs. Lyle Lester and Miss Bernice Larson teach the two first-grade rooms.

In response to the increasing budgetary needs of our local schools, American Bank & Trust was inspired to give back to communities through Spirit Cards. The Spirit Card is a debit card that showcases the school district’s name, colors and mascot. When American Bank & Trust account holders make a purchase with their Iroquois/Lake Preston Sharks Spirit Card, AB&T donates a percentage of money back to the Iroquois and Lake Preston school Districts. Since 2022, schools have received a total of $3,500. Representatives from the AB&T Iroquois Branch presented a check for $1,000; these funds will be used to purchase a new squat rack for the weight room.
